Frequently Asked Questions
Why has H&M established the H&M Design Award?
As a design driven company with great love for fashion we know the importance of support at early stages and that’s why we created the H&M Design Award, to support and encourage graduating designers as they try to build a career in fashion.
What is the prize of H&M Design Award?
If you make it to the final eight and thereby become a finalist, you win €5,000. If your flow continues and you become the overall winner you will receive a prize sum of €50,000 and the chance to develop key pieces from your winning collection to be sold at H&M.
Who can apply to participate in the award?
You must plan to graduate from a 2015 BA or MA qualifying program (or equivalent to that) from a participating college. You find all schools participating in the Award here.
Your graduate collection should be based on garments, with at least four complete outfits per entry (sorry, no entries that are just print or accessories). The collection can focus on womenswear, menswear, kidswear or a mixed application.
The H&M Design Award is held in English so it is really important that you are able to speak and understand this language.
What do I do if my school is not on the list of participating colleges?
Adding new colleges to the H&M Design Award is something we are constantly looking into and for every year more schools are included.
If your school is not on the list of participating colleges at the moment, you are always welcome to apply to become a part of the H&M design team.

Student placement applications will only be considered from candidates who are currently undertaking a BA or MA design education.
I have already participated in the H&M Design Award, can I apply again?
Yes, you are welcome to apply as many times as you want as long as you are a graduate from a BA or MA qualifying program, or equivalent to that, from a participating college. You find all schools participating in the Award here.
I want to make changes to my application, how do I do that?
If you have any changes or additions to your application please submit a new application. If f we find more than one application from someone we always look at the latest version when making our selection.
What happens after I have submitted my application?
After the application period closes (July 31st 2015) H&M will go through all applications and select 24 semifinalists who will be invited to a semifinal in London early December 2015. From the 24 semifinalists eight finalists will be chosen to proceed to the final and present their graduate collection in front of an international jury. The international jury who is led by Ann-Sofie Johansson, Creative Advisor at H&M, will select the overall winner of H&M Design Award 2016.
What criteria are used to decide the winner?
The H&M Design Award is based on the BA and MA students’ graduate collections. The jury assesses the designers’ creativity and innovation, the element of surprise and the craftsmanship. We also look at how well-made and well-coordinated the graduate collection* is.
*Please don’t forget that the entering graduate collection must include a minimum of four outfits and the primary focus of the collection should be the garments, not textiles or accessories.
